Flying high above the Tower of London and Tower Bridge looking westwards the detail rich view of London Looking West comprises many famous historical monuments as well as the new landmarks of modern contemporary London, the global city and world financial centre.

As always Hartwig’s ambition is to depict not only the iconic and instantly recognisable monuments but also to include as much of the ordinary city fabric as possible and to find the right balance between accuracy and playful artistic interpretation. Even dense rush hour traffic on London Bridge and elsewhere is included.

South of the River Thames we do not only see The Shard dominating the skyline but also Guy’s Hospital, the new London Bridge Station, London City Hall, Southwark Cathedral, Borough Market and Tate Modern with its new extension.

To the north we can spot The Monument, many of Christopher Wren’s churches, Mansion House, The Bank of England and the Royal Stock Exchange Building as well as the aptly nicknamed “Walkie-Talkie” building, Lloyd’s of London or the “Cheese-grater”, more recent additions to the ever changing cityscape.

The Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, The London Eye, Centrepoint, Somerset House, the Royal Court of Justice, the BT Tower, Saint Paul’s Cathedral and Old Bailey form the backdrop to the scene.
