The Artist - Hartwig Braun

Hartwig Braun

An architect and artist, Hartwig expresses his unique view of the world around him in his quirky, yet quite accurate, eye catching hand-drawn illustrations. Since 2005 this intriguing guy, who previously lived and worked in Amsterdam, Paris & Berlin, has been drawing these complex and very detailed images of cities and famous views from around the world.

Able to converse easily in 4 different languages and has great passion for studying maps, urban structures and googling around the earth he also has a tremendous zest for analyzing the make up of the English language. In his spare time, you will probably find him in the kitchen cooking an exotic dish he just found in a book or magazine, googling around the globe, reading a book or engaged in a heated debate about something he is really passionate about.

All of Hartwig’s images are drawn by hand and colourised digitally. He uses bird’s eye view pictures, city maps and his personal experience gained from walking around the areas illustrated. This enables him to capture the bustling energy of a city with vibrant colours and imaginative perspectives.

“I have always had a passion for the metropolis. As an architect, I combine my architectural knowledge of structures to unravel the essence of a city together with artistic freedom to create these stylistic cityscapes from around the world.” (H. Braun)

Creating the art

Hartwig Sketching

Creating these images require time, patience and passion as all of Hartwig’s images are drawn by hand and the play with perspective to create a "fish-eye" effect is done freehand.

Smaller images would normally take a week or two to draw but a full and detailed panoramic image could take up to several months to do and involves drawing every single building sometimes up to 20-30 times. He uses bird’s eye view pictures, city maps and his personal experience gained from walking around the areas illustrated. This enables him to capture the bustling energy of a city with vibrant colours and imaginative perspectives. For some of the images the underlying layout and structure of the city is planned and drafted first and on this layout the buildings are placed one next to another (all by hand sketching) until the image is completed. Some images, however, can grow organically without any planned layout - for example the panoramic view of London.Hartwig Drawing

When all the outlines for the individual buildings have been completed they are traced once more as one contiguous line drawing and then scanned onto the computer to be colourised digitally. This enables the creation of various colouring styles for the same hand-drawn outlines.

“When I first look at the blank paper, I don't really know where to start! But then I just put pen to paper, take a look at the book or the map and just sketch what I see in my mind. I get a great buzz when I see the image growing on the paper in front of me and I enjoy every single minute of it.” (H. Braun)

The Following images show the process in more detail. Notice the layers of tracing paper stack on top of each other and the use of different colours and pen thicknesses to slowly build the details from layer to layer:

Once Hartwig is happy with the details, perspective and look of the final drafts (and many many traces and layers later - up to 20 or 30 in some cases) he uses a thin black pen to create a final contiguous line drawing, which will be then scanned and colourised digitally:

Then he did Paris, New York and Berlin too. He puts a lot of time and energy into each of his hand drawn images. It is a great reward for us both to dee what amazing opportunities have opened to us in such a short period of time .” (I. Lilos)
